quick note: the link in the title of this post leads to a brief summary (thanks to perez hilton) about the issue. i'll be adding a link to the actual article somewhere in the rest of the post.
it seems marijuana might become legalized in california soon. if it actually does happen, california will be the first state in the nation to do so. the state already benefits financially from medical marijuana... think of how much more california could earn through a marijuana industry.
unfortunately, federal law states that marijuana is illegal. no matter what. the U.S. supreme court ruled that federal agents have the right to crack down on users and distributors (even those dealing with medical marijuana in california). however, the government can't force the state to assist enforcing the federal ban if the state legalizes the drug. federal agents won't be able to do much without the assistance of state officers.
if that's the case, then california shouldn't have any problems. but what does that mean for the rest of the country? do you think this will open the door to other drugs being legalized? will other states follow in california's steps? most important of all, what do you think is their reason for legalizing marijuana?

This is ridiculous. Just the thought of what would happen if marijuana became legalized scares me. Nothing good will come from it, at all.
ReplyDeleteSure marijuana is good for medical reasons, but that should be it. To legalize a highly addictive "gateway" drug...is just ridiculous. They call it the gateway drug for a reason. I wonder how parents and teachers in Cali are feeling about this.
The drug usage in Cali is already through the roof. Legalizing pot would just throw the entire state into chaos
I don't think other states would follow suit. It's kinda like with gay marriage and how some strict Republican states just don't follow the trend. States that don't want to, just won't do it. Plus, I think California is crazy anyways. At the same time, it does worry me that other drugs might be in the running for legalization, which would be pretty messed up. Aside from pot, other drugs are illegal for a reason I feel. Honestly I think they are just doing it for the money. They're broke as a joke.
ReplyDeleteThe debate has been going on for a while if California will legalize pot. I think it will eventually happen just because of the push to help with lowering the huge state deficit.
ReplyDeleteMarijuana is the only drug out there that has any validity of being legalized. However, the argument is that there is no scientific data that it is harmful for you. But that still doesn't explain why the people I know who do marijuana act different than most of society.
The main reason why the legalization of marijuana is being brought up again is because of the horrible financial situation in California. Government officials are finally starting to realize the effect a marijuana production industry can have on the economy.
ReplyDeleteIf you do your research on "the marijuana issue" it is obvious that there is absolutely no reason why marijuana should be illegal at all. If you can put aside every bad thing you've ever heard about weed, any comparison to any other mind-altering substance, and just look at the pure facts then you can plainly see the positive effects of production and use.
This will be interesting if the bill does pass, because California will then have the responsibility to prove to the rest of the U.S. that the plant can effectively be taxed and distrubuted responsibly. However, if their system fails, then we'd never hear the end of it from those against legalization, and the process will be postponed for another 100 years.
legalizing marijuana will be the gateway to other drugs being passed because other parties will push their purposes being legit and medicinal. I think we should find another alternative way to prevent such drugs from becoming legal. Keep the drug battle up and find ways to veto the bill.
ReplyDeleteThe domino effect will take place very easily if we let one thing pass and I don't think we are strong enough to keep the other pieces from falling. Stop it altogether and find a way to strengthen our overall drug prevention programs to ensure that such drugs don't find such back door access to our main societies.
Beer and other alcohol are probably deadlier than marijuana if consumed irresponsibly, yet there are no actual laws that prevent people from doing so. In the case of marijuana, it has a widely-known reputation of aiding in medicinal fields (aside from the darker side effects).
ReplyDeleteAs human nature, we tend to desire what we can't have. By legalizing this, there's a slight probability that few may drop the drug (but that doesn't lay off the possible fact that people will drop it and instead hunt for stronger drugs).
If marijuana is legalized, the state government would have the ability to regulate the drug and/or gain large profits.
Considering how much under-the-table drugs are circulating, on a shallow level, the main difference would be the profits gained.
In the end, there are still people who will find a way to get their hands on marijuana, other drugs, overdosing [even with] prescription drugs, products containing ammonia, alcohol, etc. This will only add to the already-long list of legal substances with [possible] "unhealthy" consequences.
I think that if marijuana is deemed to be legal in California, attempts to legalize other drugs will come along eventually. Although I think it would be good to legalize it for medicinal purposes, the whole process would open too many doors for other drugs to be legalized that shouldn't be.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think if marijuana becomes legalized, then people will try to legalize other drugs as well. Even though there isn't really anything wrong with pot (alcohol and tabacco really are worse), I just don't think it's a good thing to do.
ReplyDeleteYou might hate me for it but I say "do it." We need the money; it could do wonders for us. It might not get us out of our recession but it sure would help. I don't see anyone else trying to find ways to get the country money.
