adderall & ritalin: good or bad?

this past week i had a looong paper to write and i hate to admit it but i felt like i needed a pick-me-up so i bought a bottle of 5hr energy from 7eleven. have you ever sat around thinking you need an extra boost and turn to energy drinks or caffeine pills to get the job done? i know that during midterms and finals, 5hr energy gets sold out at local stores. it's pretty crazy how we've become so dependent on these outside sources of energy. it makes you think about adderall and ritalin.. and how students turn to these drugs for a burst of energy that helps them concentrate and become "better students." has anyone ever taken these drugs? it seems natural for us to consider these options and doesn't come across as wrong, immoral, or illegal.. which they are. adderall and ritalin are prescribed drugs that are used to treat ADD or ADHD. what makes a student turn to such desperate measures? and once you start taking them, do you become addicted? what are the after-effects? i was reading an article that talked about the affects of such pills and it said that students experience a surge of energy to be able to concentrate on studying; however, once that rush dissipates, students experience crippling after-effects. after reading this, if given the chance, would you still try adderall or ritalin? if you've experienced the highs and lows of the drugs first-hand, do you still continue to take them? if so, why? is it really worth it?

this reminds me of the simpsons episode "brother's little helper" where bart is prescribed focusin to help him concentrate in school. do you think people introduce these drugs as a way to control children or to alleviate the symptoms of conditions?

  1. If it wasn't prescribed to you, you shouldn't be using it. It's cheap and unfair to students who actually put in the effort.

If people aren't abusing or just using it every now and then to stay alert, why not? It's just like taking a bunch of energy drinks or pills. It's all the same, it's just that you don't necessarily associate the drinks with drugs.

that's true. aren't energy drinks and all the other stuff that's out there pretty much the same thing? i don't see what the big deal is. it's not even like everyone does it.

  4. I see people do it all the time (well, taking energy drinks and things like that). I think it's just part of human nature to want to look for that shortcut or crutch or whatever you want to call it. But I do think it's unfair when compared to people who don't use them.

  5. agreed with the person above me. it's like athletes taking steroids; it isn't fair unless you need it for medical reasons.

  6. aren't there other ways to treat kids? i feel like what we do in real life is like that episode. we use our medical knowledge to control kids/people which is bad

It's like they say: those who do well in high school struggle the hardest in college. They need to claw their way to the top any way they can to keep themselves on that pedestal. Look at average students, they might drink the occassional energy drink or whatever but they don't go crazy over their grades. These kids look at school as a competition and will do whatever they can to win.

if it's not prescribed to you but you take it anyway that's an illegal drug and that's all there is to it

  10. I say take natural caffeine like tea. Energy drinks have too many after-affects like crash and burning. I rather find alternative methods to staying focused than rely on such drugs. It may be safer than other things out there but it will eventually hurt your body without you knowing it. I say look for another way, there can't be only that path.

who knows maybe adderall is the only way some people can get into gear i know some people who dont get affected at all by caffiene

plus i think this kind of stuff only happens at uppity schools like u of c or harvard or something where people really need to strive to be at their best 24/7 which is probably really tiring

Maybe it is for "better schools" cuz I go to a public university and I've never heard of that being an issue. I don't even know anyone who uses that stuff and most of my friends have at least experiemented with drugs.

Ive tried it before and its not that great you're all over the place and then you crash and burn so it just doesnt feel like its worth it I think its worse than energy drinks

I liked it. It gives you the rush you need to get the job done without using drugs. What's wrong wit that?

  17. um its still illegal cuz its a prescription drug unless you have ADD or something

Um just cuz it's illegal doesn't mean people aren't going to do it. You would have to have some extremely good morals or something but not everyone is perfect.
